Mailbox Overflow!

When we started the Readers Reach Out program, I cleared out a small bookshelf in my office to safely store all your card submissions before forwarding them to our designated recipient. Those shelves are now chockablock full because they are holding over 1,200 handmade cards! Yes, I said, 1,200. Thanks to you, all these lovely cards will soon be on their way to the residents of Arcadia Nursing Home. Here are some wonderful samples of cards you sent!

Here's a reminder of how Readers Reach Out works: Look for this column in each issue of CardMaker to see an upcoming card theme, along with our designated recipient. Using the theme as a guideline, create as many cards as you'd like and mail them to the address below. before shipping the cards to our designated organization, we will choose a few submissions that illustrate a range of cardmaking techniques and styles. These sample cards will be published in a future issue. One of them could be yours!

Your Next Theme is ...
Elegance

Your cards will be donated to: Necessities Bag, an organization that supports mastectomy patients.
Your Deadline: Cards must be received by
Sept. 12, 2008.

The Necessities Bag is a reusable tote filled with bandages and essentials for wound care, hygiene and personal comfort. Medical staff distribute the bags to recovering mastectomy patients, so the bags also serve as a resource for surgeons and nurses to improve communication with patients about the challenges of major surgery. You can read more about this fabulous organization on their Web site: www.necessitiesbag.org.

General Guidelines: Each Necessities Bag contains a blank note card so that patients can write to the organization about how they are doing, thus keeping up a dialogue of support. This is where your talents come into play! The handcrafted cards you submit will be tucked into the Necessities bags and used by recovering patients. Please submit feminine cards that are blank inside. Although the pink ribbon is a great symbol, the organization would prefer a wide range of pretty, stylish cards that would be nice for everyday correspondence.

Your Suggestions Are Very Welcome We would like this program to benefit people all across the country. If you know of an organization that would welcome handcrafted cards for its patients or residents, please send a note to: readerconnect@yahoo.com. Think about group facilities, such as local children's hospitals, nursing homes, cancer treatment facilities and women's shelters.

Sincere thanks to all of you for your hard work and beautiful cards!
Mary Lynn
